A building designed to respond to the layers of topography & architecture of medieval Baku

The Colonnades

In order to thrive, new buildings need to engage with the publc realm and be designed to draw people in. The conceptual starting point for the design of this multi-level development of restaurants, bars and commercial office space is the city’s historic core, whose enclosing walls provide shelter from the elements and, with its bringing together of arcades, steps, ramps and walkways, creates a three-dimensional landscape that encourages people to explore.

To further embed the development within its context the local limestone is employed extensively for the buildings structural frame and for the hard landscaping across the site.
